Biography
At 15 years of age I bought my first camara Nikon FM2 with the intention of capturing my friends portraits, many of them artists and musicians. It was very clear to me that I wanted to study something related to art, I was good at painting, drawing and photography. In 1994 I left home in the south of Spain and left to London to follow my dream. I graduated with a BA Hons in Combined Media at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1999. While I was studying I participated in various exhibitions and also I was chosen to represent London at the Bandits Mages Festival in Bourges, France. I also assisted various photographers such as Jessica Hilltout, Helena Broch, Paul Trucot and Candice. My work at the time, was related with the notion of how we look at others, how we look at each other, and moreover how we look at one self. The body of work was therefore a series of self portraits through mirrors, and through other peoples eyes. There were various installations. My inspirations came from Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin.
Once finished my degree I had various jobs, such as production assistance, for musical events, assisting various photographers in safaris expeditions, digital and encoding for an advertising company, and finally a photography tutor at Zoom In ( a charity based extra activity school for children in need) I also travelled a lot specially through Africa, country for which I feel a great passion and to which I also try and go back when I can. With time my work changed, I concentrated on photographing the darkness of the night, life after sunset, the Saharian wind, the silence that has so much to say. From here a series called Fragments of Light and Penunbra, which I carried on while travelling in Africa and Brazil.
After ten years in London, I decided to return to Spain, with the objective to find new motivations. Since living in Barcelona, I have published in various magazines such as Suite, La fotografia, Rocket etc... This has made my work to change once again, its more dynamic and cosmopolitan, but also more commercial due to the assignment from the magazines. Therefore I try to focus my work in what this city has to offer: the music scene a forgotten passion I had. I started to portray musicians and through my work, I started to create a relationship with them over the years, making the portraits more intimate and pure. I love the light, the contrast from that emerge from taking photos at night. Black and white photography have a more of a dramatic effect at night, its so much more expressive. My love to capture the night in its different facets has taken my work to specialize in photographing landscapes, music and portraits.
This last year, through an fashion assignment, I got inspired in the little light at the backstage of fashion catwalks, and I started to create a new body of work, with a personal view in black and white behind the scenes of the flashes and the beauty of the models.
