Biography
Murat Duzyol was born in 1971. He got his start in photography when he joined the Istanbul University Photography Club in 1990. After studying geography at the university, he began working as photojournalist for Cumhuriyet newspaper. He then worked as a photojournalist for some of Turkey’s most important newspapers, such as Yeniyuzyil, Aksam, Milliyet, and Zaman.
During his experience working at the newspapers, he had the opportunity to see and photograph many different parts of Turkey. He prepared photo-interviews about culturally and historically significant subjects that were on the verge of disappearing. In his photographs, he focussed upon social events and people’s own stories. He received awards for his work, which was also included in numerous exhibits and albums. Many of his photo-interviews were featured on the covers of magazines. He was on assignment in the earthquake region following the massive earthquake that occurred in Turkey in 1999. Photographs that he took during this assignment were exhibited and included in albums. He was later on assignment in Northern Iraq and Baghdad both before and after the Iraq War. The photographs that he took there were published in Turkey as well as various European countries via news agencies. He followed the Anzak memorial ceremonies for Australia’s leading agencies.

Murat Duzyol is one of 11 photojournalists who earned the right to take part in the 3-year long seminar organized by World Press Photo in Turkey in 2001. Throughout the seminar he received training about the occupational principles of photojournalism and international standards. He prepared two photo interviews entitled “The Environment” and “Gender.” His work was exhibited at an exibition in Amsterdam and included in a photography album published there as well. Meanwhile, two of his photo-interviews continue to be on exhibit on the World Press Photo seminar website.

Duzyol’s gender-themed photo-interview “Women Semazens” was published in National Geographic Turkey magazine in 2004 and a photo from that work was featured on the cover of the magazine. The cover was selected the year’s best cover photo by the National Geographic Society in America that same year. Thus did Duzyol come to earn his first international award. He then went on to work on yet more projects about various topics for National Geographic Turkey. In 2007, the most famous Guide of the world is Lonely Planet have a cover photo for the Turkey Guide from Murat Düzyol's Derwish portfolio.Duzyol continues to work as photographer for National Geographic Turkey and GEO magazine.
