Catalan photographer, curator, writer, and publisher. Fontcuberta has worked in both advertising and photojournalism, and been associated with a number of significant groups and publications, including the Madrid‐based magazine Photovision (f. 1981).
His prominence in contemporary art photography rests on his use of the camera to create impossible creatures, scenes, and sequences of events, thus challenging its claim to represent ‘the real’. Thus an early series, Fauna, presented hybrid variations on animals and their ‘adaptations’ studied by the zoologist Peter Ameisenhaufen; Constellacions (1993), dirt and insects on a car windscreen as a vision of the night sky; and Sputnik (1996–7), a wholly fictitious narrative, backed by fake documents and photographs, of a Russian space mission. Fontcuberta initiated the Barcelona Photo Festival, and in 1996 was appointed artistic director of the Arles Festival.
